Full ARCA slate set for Salem Speedway to include pit stop competition with the Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series, ARCA Trucks and an entry from Ken Schrader It's no secret that efficient pit road service at Salem Speedway is mandatory if you want to go to victory lane. Drivers and crews in the ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series will get some extra practice this Saturday, September 11 when the Ronald McDonald House Children Charities Pit Stop Challenge comes to town here at Salem Speedway. Crews will be required to change right side tires and take 5 gallons of fuel; the quickest stop taking the $2,000 top prize, $1,500 for 2nd, $1,000 for 3rd and $500 for 4th. Entrants include point leader Bill Baird, defending champion Frank Kimmel, 19-time ARCA winner Bob Schacht, ’99 Daytona ARCA 200 winner Bobby Gerhart, local favorite Dill Whittymore, leading ARCA rookie contender Ron Cox, DuQuoin winner Jeff Finley, veteran Mark Gibson and Mesquite, Texas driver Chuck Weber.
In addition to the pitstop challenge on Saturday, the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will make its first-ever appearance at Salem Speedway along with the local support divisions; all this and more as a prelude to the 62nd running of the ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 Sunday afternoon, September 12 at the legendary half-mile, high-banked oval.
Ken Schrader, fresh from a Saturday night NASCAR Winston Cup show under the lights the night before at Richmond, heads up the strong list of entrants who will be in competition Sunday afternoon at Salem Speedway with the ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series. Schrader, a 6-time ARCA winner, finished 2nd in the event last year to defending champion Frank Kimmel.
After 17 events in ’99, there have been 10 different winners as well as 7 first-time winners: Bobby Gerhart at Daytona, Bill Baird at Atlanta, Mario Gosselin at Lowe’s, David Keith at Michigan, Blaise Alexander at Toledo, Robbie Pyle at Kil-Kare and Jeff Finley at DuQuoin.
