Oh Boy! Oberto Leads Qualifying For Second Consecutive Week

MADISON, Ind.--The hometown boat driven by Steve David (Lighthouse Pt., Fla.) is once again leading qualifying for this week's ABRA unlimited hydroplane race, the Madison Regatta Indiana Governor's Cup.

David, driving the Oh Boy! Oberto owned by the 13,000 citizens of the City of Madison, hit 154.950 mph over the 2 ½ mile Ohio River course during the morning session. Last week, David led the qualifying in this boat for the first time in the team's history.

Jean Theoret (Maple Grove, Que.) in the Miss Beacon Plumbing ran a 153.888 mph in the afternoon for the second fastest time of the day. Theoret won the Thunder on the Ohio in Evansville one week ago.

Only four of the nine teams qualified during the first day sessions. Qualifying will continue tomorrow with the racing on Sunday, July 6.

In the Dixie Chopper Dash for Cash three-lap exhibition race, Bernard edged David by a nose with an average speed of 129.583 mph to 129.470 mph. Greg Hopp (Snohomish, Wash.) in the Mirageboats.com placed third.
