Winton Raceway - Victoria
October 20-21
Round Five of the Motor Promoters Group (MGP) has a larger support cast than ever with the Kumho Daewoo Challenge being joined by the opening round of the national Commodore Cup series. Truck Co-Drivers get to strut their stuff while the one-make HQ Holdens will again put on a tight tussle.
Kumho Tyres Daewoo Challenge
Ian Kegg and Chris Oxley who are running first and second in the series, are
set for another round of tight race are scoring a pole each for the two
races scheduled for tomorrow at Winton.
Richard Buttrose who is place third in the series is prominently placed on the grid for both races and is expected to give both a torrid time. In all 17 Daewoo Lanos drivers will face the starter with top ten in race one separated by just one second and a measley 1.1 second in race two.
Commodore Cup
Another category to gain a new lease of life from MPG is Commodore Cup. This
first round of their national series is contested over two heats where in
the battle for pole it was seasoned duo of Geoff Emery and Neville Haley who
were the quickest.
Marcus Zukanovic was third fastest in the first round of qualifying but lost an engine later, causing the second session to be red flagged because of the number of spinners on his oil.
Daniel Richert ended up third quickest in that second session while Craig Domaschenz and Brett Holdsworth share a fourth spot each.
Truck Co-Drivers
Brothers Bill and Albert Sieders squared off on the front row for the first
Co-Drivers event in two very different MAN trucks. They raced side by side
to the first corner but after that Bill raced away.
Former Light Truck champion John Falk had his first steer in one of the "big rigs" and finished third ahead of Nigel Valdos and V8 Stock Car owner/driver Bob Middleton.
Holden HQs
The poleman Russell Land was missing for the first race, leaving Guy
Thomson to go on to an all-the-way-win form Geoff Brown who got the better
of Michael Fitzgerald off the start and held him and Justin Shiel off all
the way to the flag.
