Charlie Hunt - Rockingham Post-race notes

ROCKINGHAM, NC - Gene Wilson led the charge for the potent two-car Pro Stock punch of team owner Charlie Hunt at the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals. Wilson, who hails from Canton, Ga., is in his first year of driving for the Kingsport, Tn.-based operation.

Wilson, who is the son of legendary professional bass fisherman Orlando Wilson, dropped a tough match against eventual winner Jerry Yeoman in the quarter-finals. The 27-year old driver topped Ed Machecek in the first round of eliminations.

Floyd Cheek, who pilots an equally potent Ford Probe on the team, dropped a close decision opposite recent Winter Nationals champion Steve Spiess. The 45-year old, runner-up in last season's points chase, qualified 11th at Rockingham. Cheek was the defending champion of the event.

Hunt feels optimistic of his team and their role in the 2000 championship points chase.

"I think we are doing well," explained Hunt. "In drag racing, there are going to be times when you can do no wrong and then other times whenever you do the right things and stuff just doesn't work out. We'll be at the next event in Canada and both Floyd and Gene will be ready to win."
