Romine quickest in CARQUEST Northern Nationals final qualifying STANTON, Mich. -- Paul Romine of Indianapolis was the quickest in final Top Fuel qualifying Saturday at the CARQUEST Northern Nationals presented by Dart Heads. The race is the fifth of eight IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series events. Romine, driver of the CARQUEST Auto Parts dragster, covered the Mid-Michigan Motorplex's quarter-mile in 4.90 seconds at 256.19 miles per hour. Doug Herbert (4.91, 303.43) and Rhonda Hartman (4.91, 302.01) challenged Romine for the top spot. The quickest run of the evening, a 4.88-second blast by points leader Shirley Muldowney, was disqualified as IHRA officials determined her Action Collectables dragster crossed the center line on the pass. Muldowney, of Armada, Mich., failed to qualify for the eight-car field. In other professional category qualifying, Galena, Kan.'s Jerry Yeoman drove to a new Pro Stock track record with a 6.780, 203.94, just bumping off Friday's fastest, Angelo Alesci, who ran 6.799, 202.97. Donn Gingrich of Millington, Tenn. held on to his top spot in Pro Modified at 6.570, 208.38 -- another track record. Four-time IHRA Alcohol Funny Car champion Mark Thomas maintained his top qualifying effort at 5.998, 226.24. Thomas' run was also a new Motorplex track best. CARQUEST Northern Nationals final eliminations start Sunday at noon. Gates open at 8:30 a.m.
