Alonso has "zero concern” over steering issue repeat
Fernando Alonso says he has no worries of encountering another steering problem, like the one he believes caused his big Barcelona testing crash in February.
Speaking ahead of his return to the grand prix grid in Malaysia this weekend, Alonso is confident that the same problem will not reoccur – although his McLaren has an altered steering rack and is fitted with extra sensors.
"I fully trust the team, for one month they have been doing so many tests, changing so many parts which they had some doubts about," he said.
"I think we have the safest car right now with all the studies they did.
"After one month, I'm the most checked driver in medical history – we should be safe on both sides."
"Zero doubt" that car is safe
Alonso thinks the root cause of his crash might forever remain a mystery, due to a lack of telemetry in the specific area of the car.
"Together with FIA and with the team, we were constantly doing some checks, investigations, some possibilities, and as I said, there are some areas in the car that, instrumentation-wise are probably not at the level to see this problem.
"It's like a problem that may occur, in this phrase, 20 years ago, Formula One did not have the technology to spot that problem.
"I'm sure that we are missing something on the data acquisition that we will spot in ten years' time or whatever when the technology is available.
"So, that's one reason and, yeah, I have zero doubt or zero concern."
