Belgian GP McLaren notes

Belgium Grand Prix 25th - 27th August The 1995 Belgian Grand Prix brought mixed fortunes to the Marlboro McLaren Mercedes team with Mika Hakkinen spinning out of contention on his second lap, while running fourth, and Mark Blundell scoring two championship points by finishing fifth, having been overtaken by Frentzen in the closing stage of the race. Treacherous weather conditions severly disrupted the proceeedings, with the Safety Car coming out on lap 28 to neutralise the race for six laps. The new Mercedes engine demonstrated its newly-found reliability by running well on Mark's car for the duration of the Grand Prix.

Mika Hakkinen: "I was blocked by Berger at the start and lost a place, then on the following lap I lost the rear of the car exiting La Source corner. Although I'd kept the engine running, it eventually stalled. I am obviously very disappointed after qualifying so well."

Mark Blundell: "I am happy to have finished in the points but at the same time, I am a bit frustrated because unfortunately at the end of the race I lost the balance of the car on the wet and just could not keep Frentzen at bay. This is frustrating because fourth is of course better than fifth, but in such terrible weather conditions, one minute wet, one minute dry, at least it's good that we finished fifth."

Norbert Haug: "This was a very chaotic race and we did not make the best of it. I think it was a shame that Mika spun after the first lap. Although we had four pit stops with Mark, he was still running fourth with only five laps to go. Eventually he finished fifth."

Ron Dennis: "A disappointing outcome like today's is a lot harder to take when you are competitive, but we are looking forward to Monza."
