Bite-size tech: Sauber front wing

Sauber's new aerodynamic package will get its first real high-downforce workout this weekend in Singapore.

The package, introduced in Belgium, will almost certainly be paired with the newer-specification rear wing installed at Silverstone.

An injection of cash from Longbow Finance has had an immediate effect on the design team at Hinwil, who’d struggled to release any new parts for the car until Longbow's arrival.

Furthermore, several marquee signings have been made for the engineering team, with ex-Williams and Toro Rosso engineer Xevi Pujolar becoming head of trackside engineering, whilst Ruth Buscombe, formerly of Ferrari and Haas, joins the team as a strategy engineer.

The C35's front wing, which features a Red Bull-esque design, comes in two formats for Singapore, with the tips of the flaps treated differently.

So far, the team has run with the full-length tips (top) but, with a different challenge posed by the Marina Bay circuit, Sauber may opt for the shorter tips shown on the lower of the two wings pictured.

The change in tip profile is a reaction to the demand for extra downforce, as this will likely change the shape and direction of the Y250 vortex shed from the juncture between the flapped and neutral sections below.

Changing the direction and vorticity should improve the behaviour of other airflow structures downstream to maximise downforce.
