Jarno Trulli qualified on the second row of the grid for tomorrow's Canadian Grand Prix. Ricardo Zonta, standing in for Heinz-Harald Frentzen, was 12th fastest at the end of a dramatic hour-long session. Qualifying was stopped twice when Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari) and Nick Heidfeld (Sauber) hit the wall at the exit of the final corner. Neither driver was hurt but wreckage was spread across the track on each occasion.

When the red flag was withdrawn after the final incident, there was just over a minute of qualifying remaining. Trulli's chances of improving his position during the final lap were spoiled when officials stopped him from leaving the pit lane.

'I'm upset because the marshals stopped me,' said Trulli. 'It was wrong because the session had not finished. Being held up like that meant I couldn't do a final timed lap. But I'm very happy with the first half of qualifying as the car was well balanced. For the last run, we made some alterations to improve the car even further and I was really looking forward to my last run. I felt confident about my chances of getting onto the front row. It's very frustrating.'

Ricardo Zonta faced a mammoth task today when asked to stand in for Frentzen. Following his accident during practice yesterday, Heinz-Harald withdrew from the remainder of the weekend, allowing test and reserve driver Zonta to take his place.

Frentzen's accident came only two weeks after a heavy crash during the Monaco Grand Prix. Frentzen is returning home to Monaco for tests and an investigation into the dizziness and headaches he is experiencing.

'Given the little practice time I have had this weekend, twelfth position is not bad,' said Zonta. 'I was gaining confidence with each run and improving my times. On the last run, I tried to push even harder but, unfortunately, I made a mistake at the first corner and lost my chance to improve further. It would obviously have been good to ualify higher but I was possibly being a little over-cautious so as not to make any mistakes.

'The car feels good and is suited to this track. As my confidence grows, I know I can get more out of the car, and I have a good potential to finish well in tomorrow's race.'

Michael Schumacher dominated qualifying, the Ferrari driver setting a time which was half a second faster than his brother Ralf in the Williams. David Coulthard managed to use that last lap after the red flag to move into third place on the grid for McLaren.
