Chassis allocation:
Jacques Villeneuve -- BAR002/02
Ricardo Zonta -- BAR002/01
Spare car -- BAR002/04 NURBURGRING, GERMANY, May 19, 2000 - Motivated by a highly productive test session at Jerez, Spain, last week, Lucky Strike Reynard BAR Honda enjoyed its best-ever Friday performance during the first day of practice for this Sunday''s Grand Prix of Europe. Despite changeable weather conditions, drivers Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta were among the quickest drivers on the circuit for much of today''s two one-hour sessions. Both men were generally happy with the balance of their cars and are looking forward with optimism to tomorrow''s all-important afternoon qualifying session. RICARDO ZONTA
Position: 8th Fastest lap: 1 min 20.709 secs
"I''m disappointed not to have finished the day higher up the time sheets. The car is very nice here and we made good progress on a qualifying set-up. We had a small electronic problem that held me up just a little before starting my last run. When I did get out, I couldn''t get a clear lap and we just ran out of time. Generally, though, it was a good day and I think we gained some useful information. It was just a shame that I couldn''t capitalise on it." JACQUES VILLENEUVE
Position: 10th Fastest lap: 1 min 20.786 secs
"I''m happy. We concentrated on race set-up for most of the time today and it''s clear we''ve made progress because this is the best Friday we''ve had on a race weekend so far this year. I think our chances are as good here at the Nurburgring as they''ve been. Tomorrow should be pretty good. I''m looking forward to it." DAVID LLOYD, Race Engineer for Ricardo Zonta, British American Racing
"Overall, it has been a good day''s work. There''s no doubt in my mind that Ricardo should have been into the 1 minute 19 second bracket on his last run, but an electronic problem held him up for a few minutes just before he was due to go out for his final run of the day. Unfortunately, when he did get out, he couldn''t get a clear lap and probably lost at least half a second compared with what we felt he could have done. Still, we take comfort from the fact that we made progress today and that the chassis balance is good on old tyres as well as new."
