Major changes to F1 for 2001

The Formula One think tank - the Technical Working Group - has proposed major changes to the F1 rules for 2001. The aim of the rules would be to slash downforce by around 50%, whilst increasing the likelihood of overtaking, and making the sport safer. The major changes consist of the front wing being raised by 50mm to the top of the step, sidepods moved forward towards the front of the survival cell, diffusers being stopped at a line running between the front most part of the rear wheels for the side diffusers, whilst the central tunnel would be kept. The flat bottom rule would also be removed, allowing shaping of the underneath of the car, whilst the side pods height for the bottom would be at the top of the wooden plank. The cars will also be lengthened from 180cm to 200cm.

China back in frame for Grand Prix

The Zhuhai circuit in China has moved a step closer to a Grand Prix for 2001, with the circuit being given a cautious approval by Charlie Whiting, the FIA F1 Safety Delegate. Kyalami is also said to be close to a Grand Prix for 2001 as well.

New tyre rules for 2001?

Tough changes to the tyres for 2001are expected, with the FIA being very worried about a return to tyre wars with the arrival of Michelin. The FIA is considering an extra grove both front and rear, or a tread pattern rather than a groove.

Wilson moves into frame at Minardi

Max Wilson, erstwhile tester at Williams, is now favourite as the second driver for Minardi this season. He came out ahead with the team during the testing prior to Christmas, even though he was marginally slower than Norberto Fontana.

There is still no official confirmation of the engine the team will use in 2000 - one report says they need UKP 6.5m to secure the Ford engine, which would be a development of the unit they used this season, not last year's Stewart engine.

Bridgestone says it will be fair to Williams

Bridgestone has gone on record to say that it will treat WilliamsF1 fairly in 2000, as required by the rules. Williams has been named as a user of Michelin tyres in 2001, and now will not take part in development work for Bridgestone.
