Heidfeld says aim is 4th

Sauber Petronas took to the track with a vengeance last season and surprised many by coming fourth in the Constructors' championship. Now, with the new C21 looking every inch as good as its predecessor, if not better, they are aiming to retain thier position for 2002.

In the winter testing programmes the C21, with Nick Heidfeld behind the wheel, has consistently been near the top of the times; sometimes even at the top. Team mate Felipe Massa is still a rookie but he too has been quick -- the car is undeniably fast and has shown little or no reliability problems. Yesterday in Valencia Heidfeld topped the times with a 1.13.720 and Massa was third quickest, both faster than a group that included three Williams'.

Despite the progress in pre-season testing, Heidfeld is cautious and does not think Sauber will be challenging Williams, McLaren or Ferrari this year.

"I don't think it's possible to break into the top three teams,” He said. "Our goal is to stay in fourth position, which will be tough enough. Remember, there are more big teams coming and there are other teams that, on paper, should certainly be stronger this year."
