Despite having mentioned he may quit Jaguar at the end of this season due to the problems with the R3, all Eddie Irvine is thinking about at the moment is a way to improve the current situation. Irvine picked up lucky points in Australia after qualifying badly but the poor performance in Malaysia showed there was no real advancement with the 2002 car.
Team mate Pedro de la Rosa isn't unduly concerned about the poor performance of the R3 and doesn't want the team to re-introduce last year's R2 unless there is a significant improvement with the older chassis. Irvine, however, has threatened to quit if something drastic doesn't happen one way or another. For the moment though, what he wants is to find some way of getting better results.
"My contract is not something that is on my mind at the minute," Irvine said. "My mind is on understanding what's wrong with this and how we turn this around. I don't need to think long term I just need to find the quickest way out of this hole we are in. And if that happens then there are no issues. I'm sure we'll find a way. I really don't think it's a case of 'if' we'll find a way out, more a case of 'when'. But we need to find a way out of this quite fast."
The Irishman returns to the wheel on Friday for testing at Barcelona, where de la Rosa is already testing the R3 alongside the R2 in an effort to determine which car to use in the upcoming European rounds of this year's championship.
