September 10, 1995 Italian Grand Prix Mika Salo in the points

Mika Salo finished today's Italian Grand Prix fifth and scored the first World Championship points of his career.

Mika Salo: "I am glad to score my first points. I would like to dedicate this result to Mika Greasley, my manager, I am sure it will cheer him up. Also a big thank you to all the members of the team who have worked very hard this season. I had a moment on the first lap after the second start when I tried to overtake Panis. He was all over the track and I braked too late. I had another moment at the second Lesmo when I fought with Papis but rejoined the track!"

The team successfully ran a two pit stop strategy for both cars. Ukyo Katayama was running 10th on lap 29 when he had to stop unexpectedly. Unfortunately, Mika's second stop was due on lap later and Ukyo was forced to wait in the garage before the team could fix his car. He rejoined and finished the race, setting competitive lap times, but was not classified.

Ukyo Katayama: "The balance of the car was very good this morning in the warm-up when I set quicker lap times with the full load of fuel than in second qualifying. After the first start, Papis spun in front of me and I had to spin to avoid him. The car had some damage and the balance deteriorated. The second start was fine but the something was wrong with the engine and it stopped in the straight. I was fortunate to be able to get the car back to the pits, but it was at the same time as Mika's second pit stop."

Mike Gascoyne - Deputy Technical Director: "We are delighted to score our first points of the season and that Mika has scored his first World Championship points. It was a tactical race as we had planned a two stop strategy. We lost time at his first pit stop getting the fuel nozzle on which meant Mika's first stop was longer than planned and I am sure he could have finished much higher. All things considered he drove a very good race. Unfortunately for Ukyo he had an engine sensor problem but also drove very competitively in the race. I am very pleased for Yamaha and for everyone."

Takaari Kimura - Yamaha F1 Project Leader: "Mika has done a great job today. Naturally we are sorry for Ukyo. We believe that it could be a sensor problem. This is a tough circuit for engines and we are pleased with the engine reliability. Now we must work hard on overall engine improvement."
