Japanese Grand Prix - First Qualifying October 27, 1995

Mika Salo and Ukyo Katayama are satisfied today with their performances during the first qualifying session of the Japanese Grand Prix. Mika and Ukyo set the 12th (1 min 41.355 sec) and 13th fastest times (1 min 41.977 sec).

Mika Salo: "The car feels much better on this type of circuit. It will be difficult to move up the grid tomorrow because there is quite a gap with the car in front. It is fantastic to race on such a beautiful circuit after all those Mickey Mouse tracks with chicanes everywhere. I started to enjoy it already going round on my moped yesterday. I enjoy being back here racing very much."

Ukyo Katayama: "I lost time on my best lap when I touched the downshift paddle by mistake just before the chicane. But overall we seem to be running better here than we have in recent races. Suzuka has always been my favourite Grand Prix circuit, along with Monza, so it's great to be here."

Harvey Postlethwaite, Managing Director - Engineering: "Both Ukyo and Mika drove well today, improving their lap times on each run. The lay out of the circuit suits the car better. We know we can still improve the balance of the car and we look forward to an even better grid position tomorrow."

Takaaki Kimura, Yamaha F1 Project Leader: "I am pleased with our results from this first qualifying session. Both drivers have done a good job and we have improved in comparison to Aida. There is still a gap that we must close between us and the front runners. Both cars will be fitted with new C-spec engines for tomorrow."
