The West McLaren Mercedes team had a positive day's practice in which the team worked on setting the cars up for Sunday's race. A number of yellow flags disrupted the session but Mika Hakkinen managed to post the fastest lap of the day on his final run with a 1:19.698 whilst David's last run was hampered by a waved yellow and he finished the day in fifth place with a fastest lap of 1:20 577.
MIKA HAKKINEN ' We made changes all the way through the sessions today, finally establishing a good set up for the race. Tomorrow should be interesting though, as I am sure that the other teams will continue to improve and qualifying will be very close.'
DAVID COULTHARD 'There was a little more difficulty finding the balance than I would have liked owing to a lot of understeer. We ran some new tyres but I didn't manage to get a quick lap on them owing to the yellow flags for Frentzen's spin. So, there is still some work to do for tomorrow.'
RON DENNIS We worked though a useful race set up programme today with no mechanical problems. I know that qualifying will be close but hopefully we still have the edge.'
NORBERT HAUG 'Just a normal practice session apart from the yellow flags and the interruptions. We should be in a good condition and will concentrate on our qualifying performance tomorrow.'
