One step at a time for Ferrari

Popular theory before the start of the season predicted that McLaren would be the team to be fighting it out with Renault but so far Ferrari has taken on the challenge of the French squad. Two victories to Renault's three has put the Scuderia firmly in the title fight and Michael Schumacher believes his team is steadily improving.

"We have got better a step at a time, testing and improving every single detail, developing the new parts and constantly searching for ways to refine the car," he said. "All of these details put together were decisive in (Sunday's) performance."

"It was exactly what we were aiming for. I think we have the right to say that the work we put in over the past few weeks was not only the fastest but also the best. Obviously it is extremely satisfying and stimulating."

"So, it is natural to enjoy the fruits of this work. On the other hand, we know how fast things can change as we have already been through it. So, what we have to do is not give in".

While there's still a long way to go this season, Schumacher is confident that the 248 F1 can challenge for the title. "We have learnt much over the past few weeks. Our car has enormous potential and we have to learn how to get the best out of it. I believe that we can play an important role in the title race."

McLaren has been a little disappointing so far this season and Honda hasn't lived up to the expectation of its winter performance. But rivals will surely get better and while Ferrari's current competitiveness is good, Schumacher expects more of a fight to come.

"Naturally, we expect differences between the different tracks and that the other teams will improve," he remarked. "However, this is part of the sport. Formula One is a battle at the highest level, but I am a fighter and enjoy it very much. I cannot wait for Barcelona and the next round."

Schumacher's N?rburgring victory was backed up by a strong third place from teammate Felipe Massa, the Brazilian's first visit to the podium. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo was quick to praise the team's achievements. "I am very, very pleased," he stated.

"It is a win that demonstrates, as I stated, that Imola would not be a flash in the pan. This is also proven by Massa's third place. It is an important win in Germany, our second biggest market after the USA and not only because it confirms that Ferrari is one of the contenders in Formula One but it promises much for the rest of the championship that should be exciting."
