Shell celebrate Ferrari title

SHELL WINS ITS 15TH FORMULA ONE WORLD CONSTRUCTORS' CHAMPIONSHIP

Ferrari, Shell's technical partner won the Hungarian Grand Prix today with Rubens Barrichello finishing ahead of Michael Schumacher. The result gives Ferrari an unassailable lead in the Constructors' Championship with 4 races still remaining. The victory marks the partnership's 6th Constructors' Championship together and is the pairing's 99th Formula One Grand Prix victory. Both records are unmatched in Formula One. In addition, Shell also won the Formula One World Constructors' Championship today for the 15th time.

Today's result is the climax of a thrilling season for the Shell and Ferrari team. Shell fuels and oils have powered and protected the Ferrari team whose cars have won all but two of the thirteen races so far this year. This race also marked Shell and Ferrari's 49th consecutive podium finish - a world record and a stunning testimony to the reliability the partners have been able to achieve.

The Shell team is an integral part of today's success and its importance to Ferrari cannot be underestimated. For example, Shell delivers Ferrari with more than 220,000 litres of fuel and 40,000 kilograms of blended oil throughout a year for its Formula One and road car project. That is a staggering 150 deliveries to 20 different circuits in 15 different countries!

Around 40 people are directly involved with the blending and despatch of Ferrari's fuel and lubricants and regardless of the roles played in the project, all have earned themselves the ultimate accolade, a Formula One World Championship.

As well as helping Ferrari to clean up on the track, Shell is also helping to clean up the environment. By working closely with Ferrari, Shell is able to lead the fuel industry in producing fuels that burn more efficiently and are thus more environmentally friendly, drastically reducing world-wide emissions.

In fact, thanks to the relationship with Ferrari, the fuels that Shell sell worldwide reduce emissions by such an extent that it is like creating a rainforest 100 times the size of Manhattan every year.

Speaking after the race, Shell's Global Sponsorship Manager, Juan Carlos Perez said," What a year! Not only did Michael win the title so early in the season, but we defended our Constructors' Championship in style. Everything the team has been working so hard towards has come together today on the race track. Team, drivers, mechanics and Shell engineers all worked together perfectly this weekend and it is good to see it pay off this way. Well done everybody!"

David Barnes, Shell's Global Motorsport Business Manger said," I joined the Shell team at the beginning of the year and knew I would be joining a strong team but I was struck by exactly how hard the Ferrari and Shell teams would work. 2002 has been a bounty year for us, with Shell products performing exactly how we projected in the cars. Not only that, but each time we brought a new fuel or oil to a race, we came away with a victory-- not a bad record I'm sure you'll agree!"

Work is already well underway by the Shell and Ferrari on the new engine and car for the 2003 season. With both Championships successfully defended this year, Shell and Ferrari can focus their efforts on 2003. With such a pedigree and such an impressive season, any pretenders to next year's crowns have their work cut out.
