Toyota looked to have a strong start to the 2009 season, with Jarno Trulli climbing up to the podium from a pit-lane start. However, the celebrations did not last long, as the Italian was penalized for passing Lewis Hamilton while behind the safety car.
Trulli had driven wide at the penultimate turn during the final safety car period, unable to stay on track with cold tires, and Hamilton could not avoid passing the Toyota.
The McLaren team then instructed Hamilton over the radio to let Trulli retake his position, which the young Briton promptly did.
"(Hamilton) passed me but soon after he suddenly slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road," Trulli recalled. "I thought he had a problem so I overtook him as there was nothing else I could do."
Toyota team principal Tadashi Yamashina has confirmed that the team is appealing the stewards' decision.
"I was lucky but we have a fantastic car," Trulli had said after the podium celebrations. Unfortunately his luck did not last quite long enough.
