The new BMW Williams F1 FW25

Abstract With the construction of the FW25, WilliamsF1 treads new paths in chassis design. The new car shall help the BMW WilliamsF1 Team to close the gap to Ferrari.

Whereas each of the previous three chassis models the BMW WilliamsF1 Team used in Formula 1 (named FW22, 23 and 24) has been developed based on its predecessor model, the chassis of the WilliamsF1 BMW FW25 is based on a completely new approach. With each new type of chassis the team steadily improved its performance. This is not at least evident in the constructors' world championship, in which the team has yearly improved its ranking.

In 2003, the BMW WilliamsF1 Team will start the season as runner-up for the first time. But the team's aim is to achieve even greater success in 2003. In order to put this aim into practice, the FW25 focuses, in accordance with WilliamsF1's long tradition, on new technologies and innovative design.

The teamwork of the partners BMW and WilliamsF1 has been particularly close in the construction and design of the new chassis. WilliamsF1 Chief Designer Gavin Fisher explains: "The FW25 reflects chassis and transmission features which build on WilliamsF1's long tradition of being innovators and leaders in F1 design. We have worked closely with BMW engineers to ensure that the installation of the P83 engine takes maximum advantage from its low centre of gravity and compact dimensions."

Fisher also mentions some of the FW25 features: "It is difficult to refer to specifics for obvious reasons, but it will be apparent that the FW25 is shorter than the FW24. Under the skin we have reworked all of the key installations, not least of which is the drive train. In terms of the aero package, we have approached this car with a new philosophy, which has resulted in the different visual appearance. We are confident this will provide the basis for a strong development programme throughout the coming season."
