Australian Paul Lindberg started off the tri-nation sprintcar series with a win & a second placing in the opening two races at Western Springs stadium in Auckland tonight.
Lindberg started the first race from the no:2 grid and got the better of American Van Gurley Jnr from the flag drop.
The Australian was never headed, winning by a ever increasing margin. American Jimmy Sills failed to finish as a shock broke during the warmup laps, this though did give the large crowd some entertainment as Jimmy pulled wheelies the length of the front straight trying to control 700 plus horse powered machine.
The second race would rate as one of the best sprintcar races ever seen at the Springs.
Kiwi Keith Simpson led from flag to flag after getting the jump on Lindberg who started from the no:1 grid.
The action though was for third, fourth and fifth, with Sills holding off a last corner passing manouvre from Kiwi Alan Wakeling.
The pair crossed the line together with the judges call going in favour of the American.
Results: Race 1: Paul lindberg (Aus) 1, Van Gurley Jnr (US) 2, John Kelly (Aus) 3, Alan Wakeling (NZ) 4, Keith Simpson (NZ) 5, Jimmy Sills (US) DNF. Time: 1:18.6
