RED BULL SAUBER-PETRONAS: Agreement with Ferrari in respect of 1997 and 1998 engine
November 11, 1996 - Ferrari and Red Bull-Sauber, the Swiss Formula One team have reached an agreement regarding the manufac- ture, supply and development of a Formula One engine to be used by the Red Bull-SAuber-Petronas Formula One team under the direc- tion of Peter Sauber in the 1997 and 1998 FIA Formula One World Championships. To that effort, Ferrari will set up an independent working group and structure which will work in relationship with Sauber- Petronas' own technical department. Peter Sauber: "I am very happy with this solution which solves in the best way our engine concerns and will enable us to work more independently in the future." In Spring 1996, a partnership between Red Bull Sauber Hold- ing, based in Vaduz and Petronas - The National Petroleum Company of Malaysia - was formed in order to extend the group's engineer- ing sector. For this purpose, Sauber Petronas Engineering AG, based in Hinwil was founded. Tan Sri Datuk Azizan (Chairman of Petronas): "Now Petronas and Malaysia become part of a highly competitive Formula One en- gine program with state of the art technology. Head of the engine department's technical operations at Sauber Petronas Engineering effective November 1st, 1996 will be Osamu Goto. As an engineer and from 1988 as Honda's Formula One project leader, Osamu Goto has contributed to winning five Formu- la One constructor titles between 1986 and 1990. For the past three years Mr Goto was under contract with Ferrari.
