LVMS Plans Independence Day Extravaganza

LAS VEGAS - Fireworks enthusiasts will not have to wait until July 4 to see the exploding lights this year. Las Vegas Motor Speedway will kick off the holiday on July 3 with a patriotic celebration that includes a stunt show, fireworks, live music, demolition derby and NASCAR-sanctioned racing.

The Independence Day extravaganza will feature the only professional fireworks show in Las Vegas on July 3. In addition to the glittering sparks in the sky, NASCAR Late Models will make their own sparks on the 3/8-mile paved oval during a special 50-lap main event. The Grand American Modifieds will compete in a 35-lap feature, and the Hitchin' Post/Exiss Legends cars will race 30 laps.

"Our fireworks show will be the only one in town that night, so we hope to see a large number of Las Vegans at the speedway," said David Stetzer, director of short-track events. "This is not just an event for race fans. It's a great opportunity for everyone to bring the family and enjoy a summer night with exciting racing, music and entertainment."

A demolition derby will add to the motorsports excitement. This "survival of the fittest" event features cars backing into each other until only one car is still running. The last one moving wins.

During intermission a stuntman will attempt to set a world record by jumping a full-size limousine 150 feet. Live bands will add to the festivities.

Gates open at 5 p.m., and races start at 6. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and military and $2 for children 6-12. Children five and under are free. Family four pack is $25.
