Reed wins Bud Pole for Featherlite Southwest 125
PHOENIX (Nov. 4, 1999) Mark Reed will lead the field to the start of the Phoenix 125 Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring, race at Phoenix International Raceway Friday at 5:30 p.m. ET following Bud Pole Qualifying for the Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series event.
Reed bested a field of 62 would-be qualifiers for the Featherlite Southwest Series finale with a lap of 27.789 seconds (129.548 mph) around the one-mile Phoenix oval. It was the second Bud Pole of his series career.
Reed, of Bakersfield, Calif., said starting up front did not guarantee victory in the race.
"I've been trying to figure that one out now for five years," Reed said of the tricky desert mile.
Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series, NASCAR Touring regular Garrett Evans of Ardenvoir, Wash., qualified second; Jason Fensler of Wilton, Calif., was third; and David Stremme of South Bend, Ind., was fourth. Damon Lusk of Kennewick, Wash., who is attempting to also qualify for Saturday's Outback Steakhouse 200 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race, will start fifth.
Kurt Busch has already clinched the season championship and will attempt to set a NASCAR Late Model touring division record by winning his fifth straight victory Friday.
