Pikes Peak: Guy Cosmo preview

The oval less taken: Guy Cosmo to make oval racing debut at Pike's Peak.

South Setauket, NY -- Guy Cosmo currently ranks 2nd in the Star Mazda Championship Series after two races. His win at Sears Point and podium finish at Sebring in the #45 www.kc-baggers.com/ Racer's Edge Formula Mazda have put him on the short list of favorites to win. Round three of the series is June 15, 2002 at Pike's Peak International Raceway, a featured support race for the IRL's Radisson 225. The Star Mazda Series primarily runs on road courses. The Pike's Peak race will be the only oval on the 2002 schedule. Although Guy Cosmo is new to the oval racing format, the young open-wheel racing champion is not intimidated.

"I think it's a nice addition to the championship this year," explains the Long Island, NY native. "I think it's good for us to get in front of a new crowd. It helps drivers like me to gain the experience we need to move to the upper echelon of the sport."

Although Racer's Edge does not have any experience in oval racing either, Guy is confident that the team will rise to the challenge and so will he.

"There is a lot of research and investigating going on.  We have very little
track time to figure it out.  However, I'm going to approach it like any
other race.  You have to show up.  I have a track to learn, a car to set up,
and a race to win.  That's what showing up means. That's what we're about."

In 1999, Guy Cosmo distinguished himself as one of the hottest young drivers in the U.S. when he won the US F2000 American Continental Championship, notching five victories in the process. Also that year, he tested in Indy Lights and was selected as a test driver for Dunlop tires.

In 2000, he spent ten months in Denmark as the Mygale works development driver in the Scandinavian Formula 2000 series. While there, he scored two poles, two wins, and 14 top-five finishes on his way to a second place finish in the talent rich Scandinavian open-wheel series championship.

In 2001, he has contested the Star Mazda series for Racers Edge at Texas Motor Speedway and Sebring. Cosmo finished third at Sebring in only his second Star Mazda series start. He also made his debut in the CART Toyota Atlantic Series. Guy finished in the top-ten in three of his four Toyota Atlantic starts, including the daunting street circuits at Long Beach and Houston.
