DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 19, 2000) Chevrolets, Fords and Pontiacs all will have to make aerodynamic changes when they go to Talladega Superspeedway for the Oct. 15 running of the Winston 500, according to a series of rules announced by NASCAR on Tuesday.
All three manufacturers will be required to use 1-inch carburetor restrictor plates, an increase from the 7/8-inch plates used in the previous restrictor-plate races this year at Talladega and Daytona International Speedway.
Chevrolets, Fords and Pontiacs also will be required to all have rear spoiler angles of between 70 and 71 degrees, an increase from the mandated 45 degrees in this year's previous events at the two superspeedways.
And the three manufacturers will have to use 1-inch-deep forward-facing flanges on top of their rear spoilers; use front air dams with a 4-inch minimum ground clearance, an increase from 3 1/2 inches, and use 1 3/8-inch-tall and 40-inch-wide air deflectors located 10 inches behind the windshields on the car roofs.
In addition, Ford and Pontiac teams must increase the width of their rear spoilers from 57 inches to 59 inches, while the Chevrolet teams will remain at 57 inches.
