NAPA 500 Qualifying Results. Positions 1-25 are locked in.
The seasons last Busch Pole Qualifying was held under generally sunny consitions at AMS. Darrell Waltrip won the pole for Sunday's NAPA 500. It has been quite sometime since Waltrip sat on the pole. 113 races to be exact. April 1992 at Martinsville was the last time he accomplished the feat. It his is his 59th career pole and 15th on a superspeedway.
The pole puts Waltrip in to the 1996 Busch Clash, again it's been sometime since he was eligible.
"This is exciting. We know we've got got good cars. We've got good people We just need some good luck. I'm thrilled. It was a good lap, and I knew I had a good car. When it comes down to it, it's up to the driver. That's a lot of pressure to put on a guy like me. I'm used to pressure." said Waltrip.
A very excited Waltrip commented, "Today is big, it may not big to y'all, but it's big to us. I'm just proud of my crew. We've had a tough year."
The good news comes on a day when Waltrip announced that he is scheduled to go under orthopedic surgey next Wednesday November 15th. Dr. Gillespie will remove 18 screws and an 18-inch metal plate which were used to repair Waltrip's shattered left femur following a July 6, 1990 accident Daytona International Speedway.
Dr. Gillespie will also repair torn cartilage damage the three-time Winston Cup champion suffered to his left kneee during this year's Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
Waltrip said he will have to use crutches for a week and then walk with a cane for another week folowing surgey. He expects to be 100% by the time the NASCAR Winston Cup series heads to Daytona in February. He now has extra incentive to be ready for the Busch Clash!
Waltrip hold the modern-day record of winning eight races from the pole in 1981 and tied the all time record of four straight.
Waltrip is eligible for the UNOCAL Bonus of $76,000. The Bonus is payable to drivers who sit on the pole and win the race. $7,600 is added to the Bonus each week. The Bonus was last won by Bobby Labonte at the Goodwrench 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The Bonus has never been won at AMS. If the Bonus is not paid out this week, it will roll-over to the 1996 Daytona 500. Since the program began in 1989, Inocal has paid out $1.5 million in bonus prize money.
