Spencer leads first day of testing at the Brickyard
INDIANAPOLIS (July 13, 1998) Jimmy Spencer, driver of the No. 23 Winston Ford Taurus, posted the quickest time among all NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Monday, turning a fast lap of 174.446 mph.
Several NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams are testing for three days at the famed Brickyard in preparation for the Aug. 1 Brickyard 400, which is celebrating its fifth running this year.
Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate Steve Park, who will return to the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet at the Brickyard 400 following a long layoff due to injuries suffered in practice for the PRIMESTAR 500 at Atlanta in March, posted the fourth-quickest time in practice around the storied 2.5-mile oval, turning a lap of 172.110 mph.
It was Park's first time out in a NASCAR Winston Cup Series car at a series facility. He had previously tested at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway, a short track outside Greenville, S.C.
Jeff Burton -- coming off his victory last weekend in the Jiffy Lube 300 -- was second fastest at 173.087 mph on Monday, followed by Robby Gordon (172.420) and Park.
Testing continues on Wednesday.
