FOOD CITY 500, Bristol, Tenn. -- Strangely, winning at a short- track had been a thing of the past for Dale Earnhardt. But that changed at the 0.533-mile Bristol International Raceway. When race leader Geoff Bodine made a green-flag pit stop for tires and fuel on lap 318, the move paved the way for Earnhardt's first short- track victory since October 1991 and his eighth career win at the ultra-high-banked speedway. Earnhardt, who was able to pit under yellow soon thereafter, led from there and clinched the 500-lap event 7.63 seconds in front of Ken Schrader.
Ernie Irvan retired from the race with engine failure, which aided Earnhardt in taking a 40-point lead over Irvan in the Winston Cup standings.
