Brooklyn: Kevin Harvick preview

The Home Team.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (June 10, 2002) - The No. 29 GM Goodwrench Service team heads to the two-mile oval of Michigan International Speedway (MIS) (Brooklyn, Mich.) this weekend, but not without making their annual stop at General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO) headquarters which houses both the GM Goodwrench and ACDelco programs.

Michigan, a track similar to California Speedway (Fontana, Calif.), harbors great expectations for the No. 29 team. Harvick, who has acquired calculated skill for two-milers, almost won this race last year, had he not been caught in the pits under yellow.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 29 GM Goodwrench Service Chevrolet comments on MIS:

California Dreamin'
"Michigan is pretty similar to California. They look the same, but they drive completely different. You have a lot of the same characteristics from the racecar in terms of setup so you can carry that over. But as far as driving it, they're two different racetracks."

A Lap Around
"The straightaway at Michigan is curved so you drive around the top of it. There's a real late apex going into turn one, you drive off in there and roll out of the gas. You barely graze the brake, let it roll a little ways and roll back into it halfway through the corner and down the back straightaway. The same thing going into turn three. Just roll out, barely touch the brake and right back in it. The car tends to get really tight up off of four. You tend to run out of racetrack so you have to be conscience of it every lap."

Last Year
"We had a chance to win the Winston Cup race at Michigan last time if the circumstances would have worked out. We got caught in the pits running third and the yellow came out. We had a car that was fast enough to win the race."

Team Owner Richard Childress and Crew Chief Gil Martin Comment on Visiting GMSPO:
Team owner Richard Childress has made the trip to GMSPO numerous times, but for his No. 29 GM Goodwrench Service team, the experience will be new. The No. 29 road crew will tour the Swartz Creek Parts Plant Plant presented by a UAW Representative and partake in an autograph session.

Childress on Visiting 'The Home Team':
"We've been going up there for sometime now, and every time I'm blown away by the plant and the things that SPO does. The sheer machinery and the dedicated work force that they have are a marvel."

"It's always something we look forward to doing. To be with the people that work in the assembly line and in the offices up there, who support us every weekend, means a lot. It's a nice welcome and plain reminder of how many people back us and count on us. Just to spend time with the people that we know we can count on and follow what we do every weekend is so important."

Gil Martin's First Time:
"This is a great opportunity for us especially since this is only our second weekend together as a sponsor and team. Goodwrench holds so much tradition and honor. And for us to go up there, and visit with everyone, really just cements the deal."
