Irwin ASA history

PENDLETON, Ind. (July 7, 2000) -- Indianapolis racer Kenny Irwin Jr. was tragically killed during practice Friday, July 7, 2000 at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H. Irwin was driving a car owned by Team SABCO and was practicing for the Winston Cup race at Loudon.

Irwin made three ASA starts in 1995, with a best finish of ninth and a best start of 13th. His best finish came at Toledo Speedway, Toledo, Ohio, and his best start came at Jennerstown Speedway, Jennerstown, Pa. In 1996, Irwin made five starts, posting a career-best finish of seventh on August 25, 1996 at The Milwaukee Mile. He also posted a career-best qualifying effort in 1996, starting fifth at Toledo in September 1996.

"Any time the sport suffers a loss, it hurts us all," ASA Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mark Gundrum said. "Due to the limited number of starts Kenny made with this series, we probably didn't know him as well as we could have, but he was a young talent with a lot of potential in this sport. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Irwin family, his team and his friends."

In his eight ASA starts, Irwin garnered two top-10 finishes led 37 laps and earned $9,035. His loss is felt throughout the motorsports community.
