Drivers talk about the recent Daytona test
Larry McClure, team owner of one of the hottest 'plate' racers, Sterling Marlin, provided a bit more detail on the tests that were performed. "We tried rear spoilers from four inches to eight inches," McClure said. "We tried high downforce packages that had a tall rear spoiler and all sorts of apparatuses on the roof and windshield. We tried low downforce packages. We tried restrictor plates from the current size to considerably larger.
"From our standpoint, the low downforce package looked the way to go. That was with a rear spoiler height of five inches and a front ground clearance of five inches. It maintained a good bit of stability but put more driver into the car. Sterling said he was driving through the corners again, like at Atlanta. He felt more in control. "More than that, cars were able to pass each other again. You didn't need to have two or three buddies to push you around the car in front of you."
The speeds that were recorded for the low downforce package ranged in the 186 mph range while the high downforce package netted speeds in the 188 to 189 mph range.
When asked whether the changes would take effect sometime this year Gary Nelson said, "We always keep our options open. But we would rather stay with what we have than do something that hasn't been researched."
