Pontiac gets second title in three years

HOMESTEAD, Fla., (Nov. 17, 2002) - As Pontiac Grand Prix driver Tony Stewart begins his reign as NASCAR's newest Winston Cup champion, Pontiac is savoring its fourth-ever title and second in the past three seasons.

During the past four seasons, Pontiac has become a major player in NASCAR's premier series, winning 30 races during that span. Joe Gibbs Racing's operation has been a key member of that winning Pontiac lineup. Gibbs already featured Bobby Labonte's familiar No. 18 Grand Prix, and then added the No. 20 Grand Prix of Stewart in 1999, which has become one of the most dominant vehicles on-track week in and week out.

"This is a very exciting day," said Lynn C. Myers, General Manager, Pontiac-GMC Division. "We want to extend our congratulations to Tony Stewart and everyone associated with Joe Gibbs Racing.

"We have all marveled at what Tony Stewart and Greg Zipadelli have achieved during their relatively young careers with the No. 20 Pontiac," said Myers. "Tony, Greg and their entire team have shown tremendous abilities in the Winston Cup Series. It was obvious that it was only a matter of time before they reached the pinnacle of the sport.

"Today's championship begins the celebration of another chapter in Pontiac's racing legacy and provides us with both enthusiasm and momentum as we look forward to an exciting future."

Pontiac Grand Prix Marketing Director Bob Kraut, who is also enjoying his second title since joining the brand in 2000, echoed Myers' sentiments.

"What can I say? The Grand Prix is all about excitement and there is nothing more exciting than claiming NASCAR's ultimate prize,'" said Kraut.

"The Pontiac Grand Prix, whether its on the racetrack or on the street, is a great handling car and now we have the endorsement of our second NASCAR Winston Cup crown in three years to back it up."

Stewart's title is the 35th crown for General Motors since NASCAR began honoring its champions in 1949. General Motors, through the participation of its Pontiac and Chevrolet brands, is easily the most successful automobile company involved in NASCAR Winston Cup racing today, having won 25 of the last 30 Winston Cup championships.
