WINSTON SELECT 500, Talladega, Ala. -- In this thrilling race, Dale Earnhardt continued his mastery of Talladega Superspeedway, at 2.66 miles, the largest on the Winston Cup circuit. Earnhardt earned his seventh career Winston Cup victory at Talladega in an exciting duel with Ernie Irvan, whom he beat by just 6-hundreths of a second to record the 62nd victory of his career.
Combined, Earnhardt and Irvan led 142 of the 188 laps, leaving nine others to claim the rest. At the finish, Michael Waltrip was third, Jimmy Spencer fourth and Ken Schrader fifth.
The final thrills were set up by the race's last caution, and on the green, Earnhardt and Irvan, 11th and 16th, respectively, screamed through the field toward the front. BY lap 184, Earnhardt was ready to make his move around leader Jimmy Spencer. With the help of Irvan, Earnhardt moved to the inside of Spencer and they drove down into the first turn. On the final lap, Earnhardt was leading Waltrip, Ken Schrader, Irvan and Spencer. Waltrip tried to pass on the inside down the backstretch and as he did so, Schrader went to the outside. They couldn't get around Earnhardt, who by now, had Irvan tucked in behind his rear bumper. All the jockeying was for naught, though, as Earnhardt held off all contenders for his 38th superspeedway victory.
In the Winston Cup championship hunt, Irvan gained a 10-point bonus for leading the most laps and thus kept Earnhardt at bay, Irvan stood No. 1 in the Winston Cup point standings, 25 ahead of Earnhardt.
