Herbert Qualifies Fifth in Inaugural Event at Hometown Track
Doug Herbert qualified the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster in the fifth position at the inaugural NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway in his hometown of Charlotte, N.C. This race is the first of six in the Countdown to the Championship.
The weekend has been an emotional one for Herbert. Family and friends have been on-hand to support the driver, whose dragster features a tribute BRAKES wrap with pictures of his sons Jon and James.
"I always knew that if the NHRA came to Charlotte it would be really cool but this weekend has just been awesome. There's been a lot of support for BRAKES. Sponsors have donated, Connie Kalitta presented me with a check before qualifying and even the fans have been stopping by to donate money. We have a lot of people to thank."
Herbert will face No. 12 qualifier Morgan Lucas in the first round of eliminations on Sunday. The driver of the SnaponFranchise.com dragster is yet to face Lucas this season. Last year they met twice in eliminations, at Sonoma and Richmond, with both victories going to Herbert.
"We're up against Morgan Lucas for first round and we can't let our guard down on this one," said Herbert. He had a really good run today so we'll have to be on our game tomorrow morning. Those guys are going to be hard to beat but we'll be giving it our all."
