BACA OPENS NHRA FINALS IN NO. 2 SPOT AT POMONA
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2007) -- David Baca picked up where he left off last weekend in Las Vegas. The veteran nitro pilot opened qualifying for the 43rd annual Auto Club NHRA Finals with the second quickest lap of the day in the Matco Tools dragster, 4.523 seconds.
Baca, a three-time NHRA Top Fuel finalist, opened qualifying for the final event of the 2007 NHRA season with the second quickest pass of the day. Baca used a Lee Beard tune-up to power the Matco Tools dragster to a run of 4.532 seconds at 329.18 mph at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Last weekend, Baca qualified the Matco-backed rail fifth at the Las Vegas race.
"We're guaranteed to play on Sunday with that number," Baca said. "That was awesome. I finally got to meet John Torok of Matco (Tools) and to go out there and put his hot rod in the middle of pack on the first run is great. By the end of the show, we were on top and just missed the No. 1 spot by two thou (thousandths of-a-second). We're having a great time."
