Fifth on Friday, WJ Stays on Course in Reading
One of Warren Johnson's primary goals entering the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals was to lock in his playoff position in the POWERade championship fight. Therefore, qualifying for Sunday's final eliminations received top priority, with Johnson's GM Performance Parts GTO Racing team responding by making two solid runs during Friday's opening action at Maple Grove Raceway, with their quickest pass of 6.713-seconds at 205.66 mph earning the provisional fifth position with two attempts remaining.
"We're definitely heading in the right direction with this GM Performance Parts GTO, and if we fix our performance in the early part of the run, we'll be good to go. Although the forecast is calling for a much cooler day tomorrow, which will make it ungodly fast, we should be fine, because we can use today as a baseline and take advantage of whatever Mother Nature puts out there. So far this weekend, we're keeping to our game plan."
