TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 19, 2003) -- Only minor mechanical gremlins in his brand-new Formula SCCA racer have slowed Jeremy Treadway, of Ticonderoga, N.Y., this year, and today, nothing could stop the 24-year-old from winning the series' North American Championship event at Heartland Park Topeka.

Driving the No. 12 Stonebridge Sports and Classics Formula SCCA entry, Treadway started from the pole position and built a comfortable lead in the first half of the 20-lap, 42-mile Championship race. A mid-race caution bunched the field, allowing Kris Szckeres and Franklin Futrelle to get a jump on Treadway going into turn one. The lead for Futrelle was short-lived, though, as Treadway was soon through, cruising on to take a 5.92-second victory.

"I missed two shifts on the front straightaway, we've been having transmission problems all week long," Treadway said of his restart. "We new it [the problem] was coming back, we just didn't know when. It just happened to come back on the restart. It was like an open door policy then, they just went right by. I got it back together and got it in the right gear. I knew when I dropped back to third that it was just a matter of laps before I got back in front. Then, I made a pass on two great competitors. We got lucky and had the car to win."

Szckeres, of Hartland, Mich., held on for second place, and Elivan Goulart, of Shelton, Conn., took the final spot on the podium. Futrelle would eventually finish fifth, behind Mirl Swan, of Platte City, Mo.

In a race within the race, Jonathan Holtzman, of Orchard Lake, Mich., led all the way in the Sports Racing Pro Series category driving his No. 37 Lola Sports 2000 machine. Local driver Hans Peter, of Overland Park, Kan., finished second in a Carbir Sports 2000.
