ALLSTAR: Lernerville Sept. 1 preview

The fourteenth annual Earl and David Bauman Memorial All Star Sprint Car Classic paying $6,000 to win will be held Friday, September 1st 2000, at Don Martin's Lernerville Speedway. A 15 lap Dingbats Restaurant Pure Stock Invitational, awarding $350 to the victor will also share the racing card. Time trials will start at 7:15pm on Orren Zook's Commercial Truck and Trailer Night and pit gates open at 4:30. Zook has added $1,000 to the Sprint first place money for a total of $6,000. In memory of their son, the late Sprint car driver, Spanky Lewis, Jack and "Pete" Lewis will present $500 to the Sprint driver-leading Lap 18. Eighteen was the number of Spanky's Sprint. This special Sprint Invitational race honors Lernerville's assistant promoter, Earl Bauman who passed away in 1985. In 1998 the Earl Bauman Memorial Race had been renamed the Earl and David Bauman Memorial All Star Sprint Car Classic. Earl's son, David, one of Lernerville's three co-promoters was killed in a tragic accident January 1, 1998. The Bauman family continues to be an important part of Lernerville Speedway. This event has attracted an excellent field of cars from across the United States. Last year in victory lane Kasey Kahne said, "We got lucky tonight!" Kahne's first All Star win came when race-long leader Dean Jacobs blew his engine as he took the white flag in the 35-lap event. A very happy Dean Jacobs warded off his brother Kenny to appear in victory lane in 1998. In 1997 the exuberant Tyler Walker did a double back handspring and then kissed his dog, Rex, after defeating the hard charging Jamie Smith. Competition has been keen in previous years and there have been only two repeat winners in nine shows. A delighted veteran, Bobby "Scruffy" Allen rode the inside line to victory lane defeating Ed Lynch, Jr. in 1996. He also won the "action packed" event in 1990 when Allen defeated Dave Blaney, who had worked his way through the C-Main, B-Main and started at the back of the A-Feature. Mark Kinser took his first and second All Star main events at Lernerville in 1994 and 1995. Mother Nature has been the only female to checker a race and that happened in 1993. Keith Kaufmann defeated Bobby Davis, Jr. in 1992. Slammin' Sammy Swindell of Cordova, Tennessee nipped Kenny Jacobs in 1991. Outfoxing a series of veterans, the late Rob Stanley won the event in 1989. In 1988, it was Jack Hewitt who cleaned house. Dave Blaney was victorious in 1987 and Doug Wolfgang scored in the initial show in 1986.
