Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. tuned up for the August 21 "Trigueiro Classic" by winning Saturday night's 50-lap USAC Western Sprint Car race at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway. The series returns in two weeks for a 100-lapper honoring the Trigueiro family, who ironically fielded Hunt's winning car in Saturday's race.
Hunt, won won the 2001 Western Sprint Car title, moved into contention for the 2004 title with his initial victory of the season in the Western Speed Racing Team ASE/Red Line Oil Eagle/Wesmar. He now trails new point leader Michael Lewis by just four points going into the August 21 Madera race.
Hunt caught Lewis on lap 43 of Saturday night's race and led the final eight laps to beat Greg Taylor, Tim Barber, Rick Hendrix and Lewis. Barber led the first 14 laps and Lewis led the next 28 before Hunt took over.
Brad Bumgarner, who led the series standings entering the race, finished 14th and now ranks third, only six behind Lewis, the defending series champion.
