Gibson wins LMP2 engine supply tender

The Gibson Technology company has been awarded the contract to supply LMP2 engines from 2017 onward.

The engine will power the four designated chassis providers: Dallara, Onroak, ORECA and Riley-Multimatic in the World Endurance Championship.

The British company is set to provide a four-litre normally aspirated V8, 600bhp powerplant for the new-look LMP2 category.

Cosworth has also been named today as the supplier of electronics to LMP2 and will undertake the sole responsibility for LMP2 electrical work throughout all worldwide series featuring LMP2 machinery.

The new spec engine formula will begin in 2017 with the WEC being single-make, while the Gibson engine will also be eligible for the European Le Mans, Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championships which will have an open engine regulation.

Teams will be allowed to brand the engine under the approval of the FIA Endurance Commission. The full technical specification of the new engine will be revealed at a later date.

The final series of measures of the LMP2 regulations will follow five stages:

• 1st January 2016: validation of the safety structures/monocoque,
• 1st April 2016: validation of the bodywork and the mechanical components,
• 1st June 2016: validation of the crash test,
• 1st September 2016: presentation of the draft homologation sheet,
• From 1-15 December 2016: inspection and final validation of the car.
