The qualifying session for the final rounds of the 2006 FIA World Touring Car Championship saw the street circuit of Macau live up to its reputation of springing some unwelcome surprises. The 30-minute session was red-flagged twice, with rain then adding to the problems faced by those drivers who'd been unable to set a quick time in the two brief dry stints.

SEAT Sport drivers were among those who were frustrated by the incidents and the weather, with James Thompson unluckiest of all. The Englishman had been on a fast lap when the red flags came out for the first time, and collided with the wall while on his first "flying" lap after the interruption. The accident again forced a halt to the session and means James will have to start Race 1 on Sunday from the back of the grid.
