Holley Nationals qualifying

Lefter, Swinarski among Holley Nationals top qualifiers Friday LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Indianapolis' T.J. Lefter led first round qualifying in the API-Vic Richards Quick-8 Top Dragster class following Friday's first round of time trials at the 2nd annual Holley Nationals at the Ohio Valley Raceway. The race is the fifth of nine national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Lefter, driving a 1995 Spitzer Dragster utilizing a 387-inch supercharged Chevy engine, covered the 1/8-mile in 4.204 seconds, at 166.85 miles per hour. Jeff Schefus of Waukesha, Wisc. was the fastest in Top Dragster qualifying. Schefus ran 4.423, 156.98 to take the top spot. Hamburg, N.Y.'s Mike Swinarski took top qualifying honors in Top Sportsman, as he drove his 1968 Camaro to a 4.413 elapsed time at 167.87 mph. Hometown driver Mike Farrell was the quickest in Modified, driving a 1932 Bantam Roadster to a qualifying pass of 4.858 seconds. Defending Quick Rod World Champion Mike Fuqua, of Hendersonville, Tenn., paced the Quick Rod field in his 1997 dragster as top qualifier; Cynthiana, Ky.'s Rusty Cook continued his domination in Super Rod by claiming the top qualifying position; and another Cynthiana, Ky. driver, Billy Smith, drove his 1971 Opel GT to the top spot in Hot Rod. Duluth, Ga.'s Dale Anderson was the quickest in Super Stock, while Billy Robbins of Byrdstown, Tenn. was the fastest in a 1979 Malibu Stationwagon in Stock qualifying. Holley Nationals qualifying will continue Saturday, as gates open at 8 a.m. Final eliminations begin Sunday at 12 noon.
