Romine, Alesci among CARQUEST Northern Nationals top qualifiers
STANTON, Mich. -- Paul Romine led first round Top Fuel qualifying Friday at the CARQUEST Northern Nationals presented by Dart Heads. Romine, of Indianapolis, covered the Mid-Michigan Motorplex's quarter-mile in 5.00 seconds at 240 miles per hour in his CARQUEST Auto Parts sponsored dragster. The race is the fifth of eight national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Romine, in an time-trial match-up with points challenger Shirley Muldowney, was on a 4-second pass before he shut his car off early. Muldowney smoked the tires on her Action Collectibles dragster, qualifying eighth with an 8.10, 100.17. Bruce Litton, also of Indianapolis, was second with a run of 5.01, 300.00. In other professional qualifying, Cleveland's Angelo Alesci drove his 1997 Chevy Monte Carlo to the top qualifying spot in Pro Stock, running 6.816, 202.88. Donn Gingrich of Millington, Tenn. earned the pole in Pro Modified, as his 1963 Corvette went 6.57, 208.38. Four-time IHRA Alcohol Funny Car World Champion Mark Thomas led his division with a top effort of 5.99, 226.24. CARQUEST Northern Nationals qualifying continues Saturday. Gates open at 8:30 a.m.
