Analysis: McLaren wing points to 2017 concept work
McLaren is investigating a new front wing in Austin that is intended to help the team understand a concept it is chasing for next year's car, given the different relationship the wing will have with the wider front tyres.

Clearly, the wing fixed to Fernando Alonso's MP4-31 doesn't share the same deltoid DNA that will be present in the 2017 challenger but it does offer us some insight, as the new wing features no arch on the outer section of the mainplane.
Instead, the entire leading edge on the first profile is slightly upturned to allow airflow under the wing, before meeting with the footplate (see arrow for usual residence of the arch).
We pointed out at the last grand prix how McLaren was already doing things a little different to the other teams, as the first few profiles of its arch projected the airflow inboard, before funneling out to change the way in which the airflow interacts with the front face of the tyre and changing its wake profile.
This proof of concept from McLaren indicates how important this control of the tyre wake is, not only to the front wing but also the airflow structures it impacts downstream.
Front wing design for 2017 is undoubtedly going to have a different look than we are currently used to and this is just an early indication of how the teams are looking at the challenge it poses to them.
