Eddie Irvine: small effort, big result
The majority of teams were represented at the Circuit de Catalunya on a warm day with a track temperature of around 34C. Ferrari's Luca Badoer was quickest on the timesheet, closely followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Jordan.

Alexander Wurz put in a long 103 lap stint in the McLaren to come third, his quickest time only half a second faster than Jaguar Racing's Eddie Irvine, in fourth. Despite completing only six laps, the Ulsterman finished up the top Michelin runner, hinting at the promise still 'locked up' in the R2.

Fifth placed man Johnny Herbert ran in a prototype whilst the Arrows team ironed out some electrical glitches in this year's car. Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya rounded out the top six, a second off the pace.

Jaguar Racing's newest recruit, Pedro de la Rosa, concentrated on tyre testing in the second R2, finishing tenth at the end of the day. Tomorrow sources close to the team say that the focus will move on to testing aerodynamics and traction control.
