New 'Desert Fuel' for Ferrari in Monaco

Fuel

*Ferrari will use a new fuel in Monaco

*Shell V-Power ULG60 is one of a generation of 'desert fuels' that Shell is currently developing for Ferrari. In Monaco, engine temperatures are higher than usual as the close running and tight track limits airflow through the car's radiators

*Especially blended to cope with high temperatures without weathering* the fuel will perform consistently in the heat that usually sees the lighter chemicals in a blend evaporate and rob the engine of its responsiveness

Engine Lubricant

*Ferrari will retain the same highly effective Shell Helix SL0907 in Monaco

*The circuit de Monaco puts more strain on the gearbox than any other circuit. With the highest amount of gear box changes and higher than average rev pattern (as cars accelerate from low to high speeds very regularly), the gearbox will be an area of particular focus as temperatures and wear will be slightly higher than usual

*Technical note: weathering

When starting a car after a long period of inactivity, it often feels sluggish and un-responsive. This is often because the fuel has weathered. The lighter of the 200+ chemicals found in a fuel will evaporate over time or with an increase in temperature.

To prevent its Formula One fuels from weathering, Shell seals each 200 litre drum with nitrogen before transit and ensures that the fuel is kept in sealed drums or rigs throughout the weekend. Some fuel weathering in the car is inevitable to an extent, but can be limited by using a blend that features less light components - as long as the fuel retains its power and efficiency.
