Qualifying set to change

A new format for qualifying has been proposed which could come into force for the British Grand Prix if it's agreed on and approved by the FIA. Instead of the unpopular single flying lap in two sessions, qualifying will return to an hour long event.

A new format for qualifying has been proposed which could come into force for the British Grand Prix if it's agreed on and approved by the FIA. Instead of the unpopular single flying lap in two sessions, qualifying will return to an hour long event. However, there will still be separate sessions within the hour.

Two twenty minute sessions will be split by a 20 minute break in between. Every driver must complete six laps in each session and the two fastest times will be aggregated to give the final qualifying time. Teams will be able to decide fuel levels during qualifying, then fill the cars afterwards ready for the race. Parc Fermé conditions still apply after qualifying.

It seems the proposed format is acceptable for team bosses but there are still one or two things to be ironed out. "It's not detailed and it's very much subject to the rules actually being produced and everybody agreeing," said Jaguar's Tony Purnell.

The two individually timed laps system introduced at the beginning of the season has been unpopular with teams and fans alike. The FIA has not yet made an official statement on the proposed changes.

"We discussed it yesterday and everyone agreed that something had to be done," said Eddie Jordan. "It looks like it will be a qualifying with two 20 minute sessions and a 20 minute break in between." The Jordan boss thinks the British GP will be when it starts. "I would say there will be something new for Silverstone."
