Schumacher credits Canada strategy

Only sixth on the grid and yet he still notched his seventh win of the season. Without a doubt the Canadian GP was raced just how Michael likes it. Thanks to the 'master of strategy', as Michael often calls Ferrari's technical director, Ross Brawn, the six time world champion celebrated another landmark of an almost flawless season.

"Winning races like this naturally gives us particular satisfaction as the start was so difficult," declared Michael. "Ours was a well thought out strategy. We knew from the times we set in free practice that it would not have gone too well in qualifying so we focused on the performance in the race. We had to accept that in these qualifying sessions we wouldn't have done so well but the race unfolded as we had we expected it to."

Great satisfaction then and, inevitably after such a win, the celebrations went on late into the night as, on this trip to Canada, Michael was accompanied by a few of his friends. Monday morning witnessed the world champion opt to spend some time in the North American countryside. On Thursday at 11.00 local time, Michael will be at Indianapolis for the official FIA press conference. I will take "only the time necessary to arrive refreshed and relaxed for the next race," smiled Michael.

Indianapolis, the 'temple of speed', is just around the corner. "Ferrari should do well. There is no reason why we shouldn't; we ought to be competitive. In fact, I think that the car and set up are formidable on all the tracks so we shouldn't be too concerned about Indianapolis. As ever, we will be going out to win." Conscious of his strength but, as always, with a hint of pragmatism: "Well, I believe that Ralf and BAR-Honda could do well at Indy so we have to be very careful."

In between the two North American races, Michael is not only concerned with motor-racing. His other great passion is no secret and he is looking ahead to the Euro 2004 match between Germany and Holland with particular interest.

"We will see if we are able to catch the game someplace or other. After yesterday's race I noticed that most of the offices in the paddock transmitted the France-England game and so...in any case, I have my fingers crossed for the team." A champion is always a champion..."Starting the tournament with such a hard match will not be easy but we hope it goes well. I wish that we go all the way in Portugal!"
