Yet another qualifying format

According to recent reports, the team bosses will be asked to vote on yet another qualifying format for next season. There have been various proposals throughout this year for a new system but none has been agreed on, despite pressure from various sources to change qualifying.

After Japan's seemingly successful schedule of holding qualifying on Sunday morning, when Saturday was cancelled due to the weather, a new format has been proposed. Reportedly the FIA will present the idea to the teams this week to vote on.

The proposal apparently is to have one qualifying session on Saturday, with the running order defined by a reversal of the results of the previous race. Currently pre-qualifying is run in the same order of the last race results.

The second session would take place on Sunday morning and would be run in reverse order from the Saturday results -- the fastest driver on Saturday would go out first on Sunday. Confused yet? There's more…

Rather than have the Sunday session results decide the grid positions, it appears an aggregate time from both sessions would give the final line up. Parc ferme conditions would still apply between second qualifying and the race.

It's a rather odd format, and would television broadcasters want to devote so much time to coverage with qualifying and the race being held on the dame day? Time will tell -- if the format is agreed on.
